If you have recently graduated from college or will soon be and are looking for employment it is important to be prepared. Try to develop some soft skills. These are the skills that most employers are looking for these days. They are your people skills. We will look more at this more later. Be sure to be open minded when taking your internships and figuring out your long term career plans. Focusing on one particular career may lead to disappointment so it might be best to have a back up plan. And finally, make sure to network. It is important to meet as many people in the field that you are interested in as possible. Knowing people cannot hurt your chances. Do not be afraid to ask for references.

Develop skills. Employers are not just looking for experience and technical skills these days. They have concluded that these can be taught easily enough to their new recruits. What they are looking for are what are called “soft skills”. These are your abilities to work with other people, having a positive attitude and showing empathy. As you notice, these are not skills that you can develop like your technical skills. Some people can never acquire these skills. In order to develop these skills you should try to get jobs where you work face-to-face with people. If this is not a possibility try just putting yourself into situations where you are forced to talk with people. Also, try to be more self-aware. If you are interested in seeing how you come off at work ask some of your co-employees.
