For some of us it may seem that we spend more time looking for a job than actually working at one. These days, thanks to the internet, looking for a job has become quite a bit easier. There is no longer the footwork involved that there once was (i.e. going door-to-door with your stack of resumes). However, now that the process has become easier, more and more people are applying for the same jobs, thus competition has grown. In this article we will look at job listings, online job searches, and head-hunters.

Job listings. For those seeking employment there are many different websites that post job listings. Some websites host job listings specific to certain fields and others host job listing specific to certain locations. Some, like Monster and Career Builder, host job listings from all over the United States and other countries as well. One of the pros to these big sites is the amount of job listings that they get. Mostly this has to do with their popularity and therefore the familiarity people have with them. A con for these types of sites is the number of applicants each job receives. Due to their popularity there is a higher number of clients using their site and therefore applying to the same jobs. Businesses may receive hundreds of resumes based on a single posting. Using an employment website that only posts jobs in specific fields may help to limit the amount of applicants by eliminating the group that is uncertain as to what field they want to work in. A smaller employment website that posts job listings in a certain city may also help to lower the amount of competition due to the drastically lower amount of visitors (i.e. people who do not come from the city may not know of these particular resources).
